Whether you’re an eater or a farmer you may have some experience with farmer’s markets.

Starting out as a small farmer is an adventure filled with learning, growth, and plenty of hard work.

Why does Oak Spring go to the farmer’s market?

In my opinion, one of the smartest moves a new farmer can make is to get involved in a local farmers’ market. It’s an invaluable opportunity to connect with your community, showcase your hard work, and refine your approach to farming. But beyond these benefits, farmers’ markets can play a key role in developing a successful CSA program. Here’s why I believe in participating in a local market:

—

1. Community Connection: Build Relationships That Matter

When I first joined the Hereford Farmers Market, I was eager to connect with the community. Meeting Stan and Karen Cohen, who helped launch the market, was a turning point in my farming journey. Those early days were full of energy—watching locals light up as they met their farmers and bought fresh, local food was SO FUN.

A farmers’ market is where you can forge meaningful connections. For small farmers, these relationships are the foundation of a successful business. Customers love knowing where their food comes from and who grows it. These face-to-face interactions build trust and loyalty, laying the groundwork for a strong CSA membership.  And let’s face it, trusting your food source is becoming increasingly important. Consumers are realizing that, sadly, they can’t just trust most labels in the grocery store.

 2. Instant Feedback: Learn and Grow in Real-Time

Farmers’ markets offer something priceless: immediate customer feedback. Whether it’s rave reviews about your beets or questions about cooking kale, every conversation is an opportunity to learn.  What sells well and what doesn’t sell gives the farmer a lot of information.

.For a new farmer, this feedback is like gold. It helps you improve your offerings, tailor your growing practices, and understand what your community values most. When we introduce new products at Oak Spring Farm—like our gorgeous ginger or specialty peppers—the market is still the perfect testing ground.

This feedback loop has also helped me become a better CSA farmer. By listening to customers at the market, I’ve gained insights that inform what we grow for our CSA shares. Plus, the market’s dynamic environment keeps me in tune with customer preferences, ensuring our CSA offerings are always fresh, diverse, and aligned with what our members love.

3. Showcase Your Hard Work and Expand Your CSA

Farmers’ markets are your stage. Every week, you have a chance to present the fruits (and veggies!) of your labor. It’s not just about selling produce; it’s about sharing your farm’s story and demonstrating your commitment to quality and sustainability.

For us at Oak Spring Farm, the farmers’ market is more than just a place to sell—it’s a key part of our CSA strategy. It works double duty as a CSA pickup location, creating a weekly touchpoint for our members. This personal connection reinforces the value of their CSA membership.

Moreover, the market is a powerful tool for growing your CSA. Meeting new customers and educating them about the benefits of joining a CSA creates a natural funnel for recruiting ideal members. Many of our long-term CSA members started as casual market shoppers who loved our produce and wanted more.

How the Farmers’ Market Made Me a Better CSA Farmer

Participating in farmers’ markets has been instrumental in shaping Oak Spring Farm’s CSA program. Here’s why:

1. Direct Customer Interaction – Weekly market conversations provide valuable insights into what our CSA members enjoy and what they’d like to see more of in their shares.
2. Product Experimentation – The market is the perfect place to test new crops or varieties, helping us refine our CSA offerings.
3. Building Trust– Being present at the market each week reinforces our commitment to transparency and quality. Members see the care we put into growing their food, which deepens their connection to the farm.

Why Oak Spring Loves the Hereford Farmers Market

The Hereford Farmers Market has been a cornerstone of our farm’s success. It’s where we’ve built lasting relationships with our community and grown our CSA family. The market is a vibrant hub where people come not only to shop but to connect—with their farmers, neighbors, and local food system.

Our final market of the season will be **Saturday, November 16th**. We’ll be bringing a bounty of farm-fresh organic produce, including salad greens, sweet potatoes, winter squash, garlic, broccoli, and much more. Don’t miss out on the season’s last eggplants and peppers, too!

*Reminder: There will be no market on Saturday, November 9th.*
