I find it’s spiritually rewarding to take a trip down memory lane every now and again.
Can you relate?
Many of you are in the thick of child rearing, others of you are heading into empty nesting or are perfecting it. Me? I’m somewhere in the middle with one last kiddo in high school…
That said, there is big change in the air for Oak Spring and me. I’ve been reminiscing and feeling lots of gratitude for what this place and time have taught me.
When I arrived at Oak Spring Farm, it wasn’t a business. It wasn’t even really a farm yet. It had been decades before. But now? It was just a name on a listing—a piece of land we’d never stepped foot on. Once a 50+ acre farm with a pond and one of the oldest and biggest oak trees in Maryland, it had been whittled down to a 5-acre parcel by the time it found us.
We bought it from Long Beach, California, sight unseen.
Steve’s dad came to check it out for us. His review? “It’s just fine,” he said with a shrug and a grin. Steve asked me, “Do you want to go see it?” But I was nursing a baby and exhausted. “Nope,” I answered. “Let’s just make an offer.” And we did.
The first time we ever stepped foot on Oak Spring Farm was with keys in hand.
Soon after arriving, I walked into the local grocery store, looked at the produce, and immediately decided: I needed a garden. Spoiled by California’s year-round farmers markets, I craved fresh, vibrant, real food. So I grabbed a shovel and started digging.
I didn’t know what Oak Spring Farm would become. I didn’t know it would grow into a livelihood or a community or a lifeline. All I knew was that something was calling me back to the dirt.
And so it began.
Just so you know, Oak Spring has been a Certified Organic produce farm specializing in CSA shares in Baltimore County and Baltimore City. We welcome locals picking up their produce shares at the farm! Check us out – we are still accepting new CSA members. With more than 50% of the season left it’s a great time to join.
